Short Bio:
Scott Bassham is a solo guitarist and singer/songwriter, who creates and performs wild-hearted Folk/Roots music with a Rock’n’Roll edge.

Mid length Bio:
Scott Bassham is an alt.folk rock artist whose original music transcends and includes deep roots in traditional folk music from around the world. Known also for his work in folk/Punk/Surfadelic two-piece band, ill-Starred Captain, Scott plots a very different furrow as a solo performer, mixing up timeless, melodic guitar playing with songs of passion, wit and relevance, to create a vibrant and wild-hearted sound that has thrilled audiences around the world.

Long bio:
Scott Bassham’s love for performing and creating music is problematically passionate! Already touring and recording extensively as half of Folk/Punk/Surfadelic two-piece, ill-Starred Captain, it can be difficult to find the time to delve into his deep love of folk music and create an entirely separate career as a solo musician, and yet, that’s what has happened!

“I’ve really been a rock‘n'roller all my life,” explains Scott, “but I’ve always had an equal love for older, more traditional styles of music, like Irish folk and delta blues, and as time goes on, I’m finding that I’ve been really deeply drawn to making music that comes from that wellspring.”
Scott’s musically journey started as a teenager in the isolated South Australian fishing town of Port Lincoln, and over the last twenty-five years, has taken him all over the world.

“I really started my life as a full-time musician in South Australia, playing in alternative Rock’n’Roll bands, turning up the amps and making a ruckus! I then, started wring songs in Melbourne with my band Bicycle Thieves. I spent a few years playing punk rock venues around Melbourne, until the city got to me, and I went travelling overseas.”

Scott then spent a few years living on the Wild West Coast of Ireland, and that was where the seeds of traditional folk really took hold in his soul.

“I spent most of my time in Ireland living in tiny villages, with no television or radio, in the days before social media, so I was culturally quite isolated. It was however the mid-90’s, and an amazing time to be a musician, even one as off the map as me! I heard the most amazing musicians while I was there, real old masters of traditional Irish music, and not through the radio, but right there, in the pubs! I was blown away by the liveliness and relevance of those often-ancient tunes, and I think it made me realise, finally, that there are no real distinctions between, say, trad folk and punk rock. It’s ALL folk music, and it all rocks!”

After arriving home at the dawn of the new century, Scott began to collate all of those influences into his own work, and in 1999, he released his first album, the self-recorded “Tunakarma”. Recorded on a four-track tape machine, in a shack on the shores of the Southern Ocean, ‘Tunakarma’ became a much loved, though difficult to find album, that successfully blended Scott’s love of folk and rock with elements of funk and country.

Things accelerated quickly when Scott joined drummer Justin Francis in forming ill-Starred Captain, and the two began their legendary and ongoing career, releasing five diverse and much-loved albums over the last 18 years.

Now however, Scott is finally finding time to continue the personal creative journey that began with ‘Tunakarma’, and is currently recording a new album, “Whalebone Road”, due for release in mid-2019 on Scott and Justin’s own label, Seawitch Music.

“I’m really enjoying being able to combine all my musical loves in one lifetime!”, laughs Scott.
“I’m constantly on the road, either with Ill-Starred Captain, or on my own, and life as an independent musician with our own label, is hugely busy, but I feel like I’m finally able to string together all I’ve learned as a guitarist, singer and songwriter, and really get my passion for music across to new audiences. It’s an ongoing journey, and I’m loving it!”
