SCOTT BASSHAM
Northwest W.A. TOUR 2022 Presented by Whalebone Music and Corney Music Live music aficionados in the great Northwest region of W.A. are in for a treat as one of Australia’s most eclectic guitarist/singer songwriters hits the road throughout the region in July and August. Scott Bassham has been recording and performing his own heady blend of melodic folk, hard bitten blues, and wild-hearted rock n roll, throughout the world and Australia for over 30 years, and has earned a reputation as a great live musician and songwriter. As one half of legendary two-piece band Ill-Starred Captain, and as a solo performer, Scott’s lifelong love of creating and performing exciting and passionate sound has remained undimmed for over three decades. “From the very beginning of my musical life, I’ve been in love with the road. Music is the path I’ve taken in my search for meaning and magic in this world, and my journey has been a long and incredibly diverse one”. Says Scott. Currently putting the finishing touches onto his long awaited second solo album “Songs Behind the Sea”, and with Ill-Starred Captain due to release their fifth album, “Get Lucid…” Scott is excited to get out of the studio, and back on the road. “I’ve got a whole lot of new music that I’m looking forward to getting out into the world, and I can’t wait to share it all with the fantastic crew of music lovers that live in the North West of W.A. I’ve been playing up here a lot over the years, and I’m always incredibly heartened by the enthusiasm of the audiences. I can’t wait to get folks up and dancin’!” Scott’s music will work its groove some and melodic magic at venues throughout the Northwest and is presented by Whalebone Music & Corney Music. SCOTT BASSHAM HISTORY
Scott Bassham’s love for performing and creating music is problematically passionate! Already touring and recording extensively as half of Folk/Punk/Surfadelic two-piece, ill-Starred Captain, it can be difficult to find the time to delve into his deep love of folk music and create an entirely separate career as a solo musician, and yet, that’s what has happened!
“I’ve really been a rock‘n'roller all my life,” explains Scott, “but I’ve always had an equal love for older, more traditional styles of music, like Irish folk and delta blues, and as time goes on, I’m finding that I’ve been really deeply drawn to making music that comes from that wellspring”. Scott’s musically journey started as a teenager in the isolated South Australian fishing town of Port Lincoln, and over the last twenty-five years, has taken him all over the world.
“I really started my life as a full-time musician in South Australia, playing in alternative Rock’n’Roll bands, turning up the amps and making a ruckus! I then, started wring songs in Melbourne with my band Bicycle Thieves. I spent a few years playing punk rock venues around Melbourne, until the city got to me, and I went travelling overseas.” Scott then spent a few years living on the Wild West Coast of Ireland, and that was where the seeds of traditional folk really took hold in his soul.
“I spent most of my time in Ireland living in tiny villages, with no television or radio, in the days before social media, so I was culturally quite isolated. It was however the mid-90’s, and an amazing time to be a musician, even one as off the map as me! I heard the most amazing musicians while I was there, real old masters of traditional Irish music, and not through the radio, but right there, in the pubs! I was blown away by the liveliness and relevance of those often-ancient tunes, and I think it made me realise, finally, that there are no real distinctions between, say, trad folk and punk rock. It’s ALL folk music, and it all rocks!”
After arriving home at the dawn of the new century, Scott began to collate all of those influences into his own work, and in 1999, he released his first album, the self-recorded “Tunakarma”. Recorded on a four-track tape machine, in a shack on the shores of the Southern Ocean, ‘Tunakarma’ became a much loved, though difficult to find album, that successfully blended Scott’s love of folk and rock with elements of funk and country.
Things accelerated quickly when Scott joined drummer Justin Francis in forming ill-Starred Captain, and the two began their legendary and ongoing career, releasing five diverse and much-loved albums over the last 18 years. Now however, Scott is finally finding time to continue the personal creative journey that began with ‘Tunakarma’, and is currently recording a new album, “Whalebone Road”, due for release in mid-2019 on Scott and Justin’s own label, Seawitch Music.
“I’m really enjoying being able to combine all my musical loves in one lifetime!”, laughs Scott. “I’m constantly on the road, either with Ill-Starred Captain, or on my own, and life as an independent musician with our own label, is hugely busy, but I feel like I’m finally able to string together all I’ve learned as a guitarist, singer and songwriter, and really get my passion for music across to new audiences. It’s an ongoing journey, and I’m loving it!”

Scott Bassham & Shantarj Western Australian Tour September October 2017. Currently taking venue bookings
Shannon Haapanen and Scott Bassham are childhood friends whose musical journey together has evolved for over 30 years. Growing up in the splendid isolation of Port Lincoln, on South Australia's Wild West Coast, these two accomplished singer/songwriters have followed wildly divergent paths in life, but have also been bonded by music since their teenage years. Says Scott, " Ever since we were just two young punks, growing up in a country town, we have both been making music and writing songs. We have always found time to play together, even when we've lived in different parts of the world from each other, and we've always shared our musical evolution."
These two talented musicians and performers will be joining forces in September 2017, to tour throughout the Southwest and Pilbara regions of WA, bringing audiences, essentially, three shows in one! Shannon and Scott will both play individual sets, then join together to perform a third set of songs, both their own and of the artists who have inspired them. " After all these years of friendship and collaboration, it's just awesome to be playing our music together." Says Scott, "I think of when we were just two young punks, growing up in our coastal town, before we could even play a note, totally bonded by our love for music....I think those two young punks would be stoked to know that we would go on, doing what we love, making our music, together and alone!"
